Gear processing can be divided into four stages: gear blank processing, gear surface processing, heat treatment and gear surface finishing.


If you look at the internal structure of a clockwork or automobile gearbox, you will see the gear system. A gear is a toothed wheel, which meshes with the teeth of another gear to continuously transmit power. The combination of products with different diameters can affect the rotation speed and force, and the products are suitable for driving industrial machines.


At the beginning of the precision gear processing process, large high-quality round steel will be used, which contains a specific proportion of carbon, which can make it stronger and stronger.


An automatic band saw will cut a piece of steel, the thickness of which is the same as the size of the gear they want to manufacture. We call it gear rough. The worker fixes the blank on the computer-controlled lathe. When it rotates, the turntable equipped with a series of carbide tools will follow. One after another, the cutters take turns to cut the rough embryo into a specific shape.


Spray coolant to avoid overheating of the truck mounted drilling machine during operation. It drills a hole in the middle of the embryo, and the last tool carves a groove in front of the embryo. This last metal removal step reduces the weight of the gear.


Now the blank is sent to a computer-controlled milling machine. The holes drilled by the milling machine can allow the lubricant to flow during the operation of the gear. These holes can also reduce the weight of the product.



After the rough blank is removed from the milling machine, the worker imprints the company name and part number on it. Then, the teeth on the gear are made. The gear planer engraves the teeth on the inner ring, that is, the teeth in the central hole. It uses a planer with titanium on its surface. Other components of the machine can make the planer run at the right time.


The number and size of teeth vary from gear to gear. Therefore, for each type of gear, the gear processing manufacturer must install a specific planer on the gear planer.


Then continue to process the teeth of the outer ring of the gear and cut them out by a computer-controlled gear hobbing machine. When cutting, the gear will roll against the machine. If the gear hobbing machine cuts the teeth to the final depth at one time, the planer will break. Therefore, the gear must rotate continuously, so that each wheel of the gear hobbing machine cuts deeper until the teeth reach the appropriate depth.


The gear is then subjected to computerized inspection and the probe scans all surfaces including each tooth. It sends the data to the computer to analyze the dimensions and ensure that they meet the engineering specifications.


The gear passing this quality management inspection is then put into the furnace for heat treatment, which can strengthen the steel. When the furnace reaches a certain temperature, workers will inject carbon into it, and the gear absorbs carbon to further strengthen the steel. And then immersed in oil to harden the metal.


Then the heat treatment will slightly distort the steel, so now the gears are sent to a computer-controlled grinder to restore the original precise gear specifications to match the bearings. So far, precision gear processing has come to an end.
